Liminal Goods

In 2025, I conducted some research on web aesthetics, focusing on vaporwave, and created a meme series, in association with Arina Atik's Meme Lab.

Liminal Goods uses low-res visual aesthetic and absurdist humour to highlight the differences between the mindsets, tools and agendas of the internet of the 2000s and of the 2020s. By documenting the disparities between the two eras, and doubling down on the internet’s self-referential quality the project aims to start a conversation on what the internet was and is for, and enrich viewers’ personal reflection on their lives online.

In the 2020s, “everything is computer” and the difference between the online and offline worlds ceases to be perceivable. By placing the tangible interface layer back into view, Liminal Goods looks at the innovative, hyper-connected world through an obsolete old lens in hope of finding once again exactly what we lost with the compression artefacts.

By using visual aesthetics of 2000s mobile phone interfaces, early blogs, animated clipart, and personal websites, the project attempts to transpose the present day internet’s hyperreal despair into the key of early internet’s low-res optimism – building an idiosyncratic link between the two moments in history.

More Meme Lab

Aside from Liminal Goods, I've made these things below. They were informed by Meme Lab's programme, as well as things I've seen and read.

Natasha Roscoe

My name is Roscoe, that's Roscoe H Spellgood. I like to go a long way in a short time; that's why I increase my velocity when possible, 'cos speed equals distance over time.
